Gifts of Stock

Gifts of stock shares can provide two tax benefits while supporting the work of the Amyloidosis Research Consortium (ARC):

Tax Benefits

The value of the stock at the time of transfer is tax-deductible.
Donating stock that has been held for more than one year allows you to avoid paying capital gains tax that would otherwise be due.

Sending Stock Certificates

If you wish to send stock certificates, please send them by certified mail. Do not endorse the certificates.
To receive proof of delivery, send your certified mail with return receipt requested.
In a separate envelope, mailed with regular postage, send one stock power for each stock certificate. Your broker can provide a stock power for you. Please sign the stock powers exactly as your name appears on the stock certificate.
Include a dated letter describing the stock and including your signature as it appears on the stock certificate. Upon receipt, your stock gift will be recorded, and the certificate will be sent to our broker.

Please note that ARC may require an additional letter of authorization prior to deposit.

Identifying Your Gift

Many donor advised fund grants arrive anonymously or without identifying information. Please instruct your fund administrator to include your full name and address with the check so we can credit your gift.

Additionally, you may contact Grace Wampler, Development Associate, by calling (617) 982-2946 or emailing gwampler@arci.org to share the details of your gift, including the amount and the name of the institution sending the check (e.g., Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, etc.), so we can track your gift and properly acknowledge your generosity.

Gifts from your IRA

If you meet the minimum age for a Required Distribution, you may direct up to $100,000 tax-free per year from your retirement account to ARC.

To Make an Immediate Impact Through Your IRA, Here’s What You Need to Know:

Age Requirement
You must be 70 ½ years old or older at the time of the gift.
Gift Amount
There is no minimum gift requirement, though your IRA administrator may set a minimum transfer amount.
Required Minimum Distribution
A gift to ARC counts toward your required minimum distribution from your IRA.
Direct Transfer
Gifts must be transferred from your IRA to ARC by your IRA administrator to be considered a tax-exempt IRA distribution
Non-Qualifying Plans
Gifts from 401(k), 403(b), SEP, and other retirement plans do not qualify. To make a gift of assets in these types of accounts, you would need to roll the assets over into an IRA and then make a direct transfer from that IRA.

Ensure Direct Distribution
To avoid taxable distribution, ensure that funds are transferred directly to ARC.
Include Your Name
Instruct your IRA administrator to include your name on the check sent to ARC to ensure we can track your gift.
Notify ARC
After contacting your IRA administrator, provide us with the name of your IRA company and the gift amount so we can promptly identify and acknowledge your gift.

Retirement plans are subject to tax when passed on to heirs other than a spouse.
